A Very Obnoxious End

As the production of the internal combustion version of the Porsche 718 comes to an end, Porsche have made it their mission to give it a send off and lord have they. The 718 was always the little brother to the 911, it was too equipped with a flat 6 and was rear wheel drive but was never given the equivallent power - until now.

Perfromance:

The 718 Spyder RS comes with the engine from the GT3. Yes, that's correct the 9,000 rpm revving 4.0 flat 6. It comes with much stiffer suspension also derived from motorsport and a retractable soft top roof.

Suspension:

From countless reviews, it appears that the Spyder RS has extremely stiff suspension that on the one hand makes it incredible for English B roads but at the same time the it will mean that you can feel every twitch, bump or divet in the road. I personally have never been the biggest fan of Porsche GT3's and always belived that the GTS was far superior because the 911 is meant to be a car to get to the track and back but not race in style, comfort and remain minimalist yet if you encounter a back road on the way home you can let loose whereras with a GT3 RS you can never turn the car down, its always obnoxious and the suspension is too stiff the same as this car.

Aesthetics:

As mentioned earlier this car is just the same as the GT3 RS but instead mid-egined and much smlaler and that follows through with the vast amounts of carbon fibre. However, for the first time ever on a Porsche I do not mind the carbon bonnet as in a car as full-on as this, that tiny bit of weight reduction actually may pay dividens. The one thing that I do not think I will ever be a fan of however are the carbon bucket seats, the only function is to make you less comfortable, they offer no different options than the comfort seats. Leaving the front on a good note I do think the air intakes (the ones at seat level not wheel level) look fantastic and a for some reason remind me of past Porsche Le Mans cars from decades ago.

Moving to the rear, I have never liked how the 718 has looked but this breaks that tradition. The just truly fantastic looking twin exhaust pipes and again the air intakes simply look phenominal - this car really does look bloody good.

Price:

When thinking about price, to be entirely honest in this day and age for a top of the range sports car, £127,000 is not too bad. It is still too much money but the "baby" Ferrari (296) starts at £250,000 and can go to north of £300,000 whereas 20 years ago the 550 Maranello would have been £150,000 which is half the price so by that methodology the 718 is not that expensive for 2024.

So, I think this car is very good looking, I know it sounds incredible and is great to drive. It is a decent price and is very likely to hold its value so I think this is a really relly good car. The only one problem is that I am not a great fan of how stiff the car is and I do not feel as though you could go for more than an hour driving it on back roads before your back snaps in half, though besides that - I think this is a truly billiant little car.
